Here are two ways to drive a small nail or brad into wood without the danger of hitting your finger:

#1) Buy a small alligator clip at an electronics store. Clip its jaws onto a brad and strike one blow with the hammer. Then remove the clip and drive the brad home.

#2) Obtain a 8" piece of flexible tubing with an inside diameter of 1/4". Obtain about 2 ft. of twine, double it over and insert the looped end into the tube until a little comes out the other end. While holding the tube and the ends of the twine in one hand, place a brad into the loop and the pull back on the twine so the loop puts a choke hold on the brad. Proceed to hammer as in #1.
